Pipistrel d.o.o. Ajdovščina – Designer and producer of advanced light aircraft and special mission aircraft Pipistrel was established in 1989 as the first private aircraft producer in the former Yugoslavia. Pipistrel’s primary activity is design and production of different types of aircraft – single seat, double seat and 4-seat; motorplanes, gliders and electric-powered aircraft.
Pipistrel is EASA Design Organization Approval and Production Approval certificate holder. The distributor network in 35 countries on all continents offers worldwide customer support and service. The aircraft currently fly in 90 countries.
More than 1500 aircraft have been produced. The production capacity of factories in Slovenia and Italy is one aircraft per day. Pipistrel is the market leader of efficient aircraft design, and innovative electric and hybrid aircraft propulsions. The company won the “European Business Award” for Innovation in November 2010, being chosen as the most innovative company in the European Union among 15,000 competitors. Adventurist pilots flew around the world, landed in the Antarctic and flew over the top of Mt. Everest in Pipistrel aircraft. In 2008, the “Popular Science” magazine named Pipistrel’s aircraft Taurus Electro one of the ten best innovations of the year and NASA awarded Pipistrel the “Best Aircraft in the World” title three times.
Because of many important achievements, awards and competition victories, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Danilo Türk, decorated the Pipistrel team in 2011 with the highest civil award in the country: the Golden Order for services to the Republic of Slovenia.

Sinus was the first 2-seat motor-glider in the UL class and the first serially built entirely of composite materials. With shorter wings and a stronger engine, the Virus SW model is the fastest ultralight aircraft in the market, exceeding 300 km/h. The Taurus was the world’s first side-by-side 2-seat self-launching glider, with excellent gliding ratio and available with either a petrol or electric motor – in 2007, it was the first two-seat fully electric aircraft in the world. Pipistrel’s 4-seat cruiser Panthera is at the moment the only aircraft available in the market with three versions of propulsion: petrol, hybrid or fully electric. Altogether, Pipistrel produces 12 types of aircraft. Uber signed a partnership with Pipistrel for large-scale deployment of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicles (VTOLs) in order to fulfil its mission of providing a safe and reliable transportation service to everyone, everywhere.
The goal of this partnership is to enable users of a future Uber Elevate Network to provide transportation and delivery services with an electric Pipistrel VTOL. Pipistrel will develop aircraft to satisfy short distance urban operations as the basis for the VTOL performance specifications.
